  16. <p>A college president quits after making obscene calls
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     In ten years as president of American University, Richard
  19. Berendzen won acclaim for transforming the sleepy campus in
  20. Washington into a "Harvard on the Potomac." Under his
  21. leadership, the average of Scholastic Aptitude Test scores of
  22. entering freshmen rose 200 points, and millions of dollars were
  23. donated by prominent new contributors that included Saudi
  24. billionaire Adnan Khashoggi. Berendzen's name is back in the
  25. headlines, but for a shocking reason. He abruptly resigned from
  26. his post April 10, explaining that he was suffering from
  27. exhaustion. Law-enforcement officials confirmed last week that
  28. Berendzen had been identified as the man who made a string of
  29. obscene phone calls to a woman in suburban Virginia.

  31. <p>     The revelation stunned A.U.'s faculty and 11,600 students.
  32. Berendzen, a 51-year-old Harvard-trained astronomer, had earned a
  33. reputation as an effective albeit self-promoting administrator
  34. with a gift for fund raising. In 1984, for example, he persuaded
  35. Khashoggi to donate $5 million toward a sports center and
  36. convocation hall.

  38. <p>     According to law-enforcement authorities in Fairfax County,
  39. Va., a 33-year-old woman who had placed ads in a local newspaper
  40. offering to care for children complained that a man had
  41. responded with an obscene phone call. Police used a "trap" on
  42. the woman's telephone to record other conversations. Ultimately
  43. the calls were traced to Berendzen's private line at A.U.
  44. </p>
  45. <p>     The woman says that in 30 to 40 subsequent calls, the man
  46. not only discussed "in gross, graphic detail" having sex with
  47. children but also "offered children to me and my husband as sex
  48. slaves." In the last conversation, an angry complaint replaced
  49. lewd proposals. The victim says the caller carped that "my whole
  50. life has just been destroyed, and you're the one who did it."

  52. <p>     Berendzen has not been arrested or charged with any crime.
  53. Since his resignation, he has been undergoing treatment for an
  54. undisclosed illness at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital in
  55. Baltimore, Md., site of the well-known Sexual Disorders Clinic.
  56. In a written statement read late Thursday by his lawyer Gerard
  57. Treanor, Berendzen said, "I cannot begin to convey my
  58. embarrassment, or my torment."
